GURUDEV ATTAINED MAHANIRVANA

After giving blissful permission for Sivagiri Theerthayatra, Gurudevan straight way went to the Velloor Ashram near Vaikom, where he participated an extraordinary meeting of the Dharma Sanghom, which can be considered the last public function the Great Guru attended. It may be remembered that Gurudev suffered urinal trouble during his stay at the Vaikom Ashram. For expert treatment, he went to Palakkad and thereafter to Madras and the disease showed some variations at times. The Great Guru once opined that severe celestial life might be the reason for his illness.

At a time when he himself was suffering from severe pain, he used to give advice and remove chronic diseases of many devotees who approached him for help and assistance in their sufferings. An incident occured in August 1928 is very unique and memorable. A paralysed lady patient was brought before Gurudev by her relatives; she was in the final stage of death. Gurudev poured some water on the people standing around, the lady got up and started walking as well as she took meals also. In the next day, she came to the Guru as a completely cured normal woman and this news reached the ears of Mahakavi Ulloor S. Parameswara Iyer who made a personal visit and expressed the hope that Gurudev should live for many more years. The Guru then asked Mahavi whether he should live for his human body which is not wanted.

After a few days thereafter, Gurudev told Swamy Dharma Theerthar that 5th day of Malayalam month ‘Kanni’ was a good day, please make arrangement to give meals to everybody. Thus 4th day of Kanni came and on that day morning, his adopted children of the Ashram came before him to pay their respects before they left for the schools, Gurudev’s eyes filled with tears which started flowing over his sacred cheeks. At the time of his birth even, he did not cry but now tears are flowing over his cheeks which must be of pleasure and of course not of sorrow. The children who came to pay their respects to the Guru belonged to all communities and religions and they live in the Ashram as brothers and sisters of a single family without any feelings of caste, religion or community.

He foresaw universal brotherhood in those children and the purpose for which he took birth as a Godincarnation is materialised. He was happy and satisfied.

Thus, the 5th day of Kanni month came. It was a day of incessant rain. As per his wishes, meals were served to everybody present in the Ashram. At about 3.15 p.m. Gurudev tried to sit on the cot himself when his disciple Achuthananda Swamy and others helped him to sit in padmasana pose. At this time, Vidyananda Swamikal was reading Yogavasishtam, Gurudev appeared to very energetic and brightness glittered on his divine face. He said to himself that he was feeling peace and asked his disciples to chant ‘Daivadasakam’, Swamy Achuthananda, Dharmatheertha Swamikal, Narasimha Swamikal etc. chanted Daivadasakam in a very malicious and beauriful tune and when the last line was being chanted, Gurudev who was rendering his divine blessings to all living beings of the world, attained Manirvana, his divine eyes closed for ever. It was 20th September 1928 or 5th Kanni, 1104 which was a shukla Sasthi Day, according to the Puranas.

Gurudev had the satisfaction of seeing the good result of his actions and he attained mahasamadhi after fulfilling the cause for which he took birth in human form. So his divine life was so precious that he remains an unparalleled entity among all God-incarnations of the world. Gurudev is not a Mahatma or a Guru of a community, a religion, a country or a period of time but he is a complete universal Guru of all living-beigns.
